The leading causes of death for children in developing countries are hygiene-related illnesses, which claim more tha 1.8 millionn lives each year. That’s nearly one-third of all child deaths.
In Lao, the annual estimate for infant morality is 5,000 deaths.
Handwashing with soap is the single most effective way to prevent those deaths. Research has shown that soap can reduce diarrheal disease by nearly one-half and rates of respiratory infection by about one-quarter. Hundres of thousands of lives could be saved each year if people had ongoing access to soap and understood how to properly wash their hands.
Soap4Life’s vision is by working with local villages in remote areas of Lao, PDR and develop soapmaking as part of the “local knowledge base” thereby creating an inexhaustible source for soap for families. By developing the ability of women to make, use and sell soap products, we will have impacted infant mortality, family financial security and start the women on their paths to empowerment.,
