The Alfa Romeo 158 was an incredibly successful racing car. In 1950 it won the very first race held at Silverstone, England in the initial season of the modern Formula One World Championship. This car ultimately secured the championship title.
During that 1950 season the Alfa Romeo 158 was driven by the three “ F’s” – Farina, Fangio and Fagioli who finished first, second and third respectively in the championship and won all eleven races they contested.
Designed by Gioacchino Colombo, the 158 was powered by a 1479cc (58mm x70mm) eight-cylinder, 16-valve, twin overhead camshaft engine. With two-stage supercharging it originally produced over 200bhp at 7500rpm which ultimately progressed to 350bhp at 8500rpm. The frame was tubular and independent suspension featured all round, via transverse leaf springs at the front and swing axles at the rear.
The Alfa Romeo 158, and later 159, reigned supreme with a victorious racing career spanning an amazing twelve years. From the first version appearing in 1938 until 1951 when it enabled the legendary Argentinian, Juan Manuel Fangio to win the first of his five Formula One World Championships.
